Trend Predictions for Fall, A Deep Dive.

As we all question whether the Summer of 2024 actually even happened, it’s already time to think about our Autumn/Winter wardrobe sooner than we anticipated. As we write this, it’s a a bleak 8 degrees outside and we already have knitwear on - something we’re not necessarily complaining about, especially as we explore this next conversation, but nevertheless, it’s cold...

Autumn/Winter collections are our favourite, we don’t know about you but we think about them from the moment they’re released, right up until it’s time to put them into action and this year we have been presented with some seasonal delights and pieces that will see us through the many months ahead.

There are many discussions at the moment about fashion being “flat” and the notion of people not dressing for themselves but rather for the public approval of others (obviously no one is going to admit this, but it’s a subconscious decision) this whole topic of opening your Instagram feed and everyone looking the same and that we need to reconsider dressing for ourselves again and what is apparent about the Autumn/Winter collections are that, yes whilst they’re peppered with trend pieces, there is a lot of easy-dressing and simplicity to take from, which we’re here for, if we can look good and it be easy, we’re here for it. Hurs, the fashion media platform which have applaudable debates on topics about trends and the socialogy behind fashions influences on women, have recently stirred up this conversation and we implore you to read it.

Shagging

So let’s get to it and start with some good old fashioned, shagging.

If you didn’t know, it’s a season for shagging. In the literal sense, we’ll leave up to you but shaggy coats consumed the runways for this season, most notably at Stella McCartney and Marni, where models were swaddled in mocha browns and soft ivories. Quality is key with coats like this, you need a coat that will withstand getting caught in a rain storm and it not ruin the coat forever more, so we’ve recommended the Enid Coat by 16Arlington, in a deep brown that won’t show any espresso martini spillages because this is the kind of coat that will see you from day-to-night and into the pending festive season.

Suede Jackets

One thing we can’t get away from right now is suede jackets, a timeless wardrobe staple that show casual elegance that’s perfect for transitional weather. Their versatility allows them to bridge the gap between Summer and Autumn, making them an indispensable piece for embracing the changing season whilst being comfy and stylish. The great thing about suede jackets is that you can more often than not, find these in all outlets; charity shops , vintage boutiques or online stores like Vinted often carry unique suede jackets with hundreds of different styles and fits. Or, if you are on the market to blitz your bank account, there’s also The Row suede bomber jacket or Madga Butrym car jacket which is perrrrrrfectly cut to perfection. In short we assure you, you won’t struggle with this one, whatever your budget.

Leather Gloves

Has anyone else ever heard the old wives tail that you should never gift someone a pair of gloves as it’s a parting gift? Oh, well looks like we’ll have to treat ourselves because right now, we can’t keep our hands off/out of them! While it’s not cold enough to wear them just yet, we’re styling them in our waistbands or even carrying them as an added accessory in our handbags and they don’t even have to be leather, we’re loving wool or satin too - anything goes and they add an element of refinement to any outfit. Whether you're dressing up for a formal event or adding a touch of class to your casual wear, leather gloves are a must-have and we’re slowly seeing them become more popular and a key accessory this season. They can enhance range of outfits, from tailored blazers and trench coats to casual sweaters and denim jackets. Not only do they provide a layer of warmth as temperatures begin to dip, but their timeless elegance also adds a touch of sophistication to your look. Again, this is something you can buy whatever your budget, you can find some second hand vintage leather gloves here : for just £4 https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/5012336223-bizou-leather-gloves-navya or recreate Ferragamo’s runway look with a brown pair that reach the elbow (obsessed) https://www.gant.co.uk/long-leather-gloves-soil-brown/7325707755866.html? if you’re looking for something more premium.

Roll with it

It wouldn’t be a winter wardrobe without ensuring we have those base layers to rely on to see us through the bitingly cold months that lay ahead, I for one, refresh my wardrobe with base layers every year and overall, Uniqlo is a great go-to for that but without fail, I always include a roll neck, usually in black but this year will be investing in off-white/cream renditions to layer under a black blazer and a brown to match with a brown jacket. We love how Bottega Veneta styled them with shirts and then trenches on top, it just elevates a simple base layer and not to mention, warms up an outfit, especially when trenches aren’t known for their warmth, but just their looks. We’re looking to Marks & Spencers for ours this season, in a variety of colourways, they’ve already been selling out and we’re not surprised at such a great price.

Full Skirting

One thing we seem to be taking from the Summer into Winter, is full bodied skirts. A trend that made for easy breezy dressing has followed us into fall. Whilst we’re stepping away from the bubble hem, we’re still making sure the hems are exaggerated. the more flounce, the better. This season we’re wearing them with flat boots and tonal even, like Louise Trotter did at Carven, or a personal favourite with barely there sandals and tights. You won’t see us freezing in a miniskirt this winter...

Maroon Rule

Maroons, burgundys, they return every year and age like a fine wine (pun intended) but often more of a nuance than a staple trend, but this year there’s a real focus. As seen heavily at Khaite where maxi, leather coats were deep burgundy’s, that have now trickled into the likes of The Frankie Shop with their full burgundy looks, tights included and then into COS’s where we’re coveting their leather trousers, which are still a hefty price tag, to more recently on our recent Because of Alice shoots where they’ve infused the colourway into their timeless and chic AW24 collection. Did someone ask if we fancied a wine?

Taking Flye

A trend that can be deemed as marmite and not everyone will delve into this, this season we get that but tartan and argyle prints. Whether you’re into it or not, Burberry as always have made a case for it in a way that only Daniel Lee could. It was hard to select an image from the show to encompass this, it was just all SO good, but we opted for Maya Wigram (obviously) in the maxi tartan skirt styled with an oversized leather jacket which closed the Burberry AW24 show which overall packed a real punch. Whether you want to explore kilts, tartan skirts or capes or if you’re tempted by just an accessory like a scarf, then we suggest going second hand and scouring pre-loved sites for a cheaper way of buying into a trend if you’re just wanting to dip your toe in. With this in mind, you’ll often find a rare print that is hard to come by these days and won’t break the bank.

Burberry AW24

it may sound cliché but peep our other reference for the case in argument, if its good enough for Carrie Bradshaw then...well, you know the rest.

Pendants

Whether it's a delicate gemstone hanging from a silver chain or a leather keyring holder draped round our neck, we want it. These accessories have a unique way of enhancing any outfit and the fact they come in practical and stylish forms, is an added bonus. Whilst we could reccommend The Row Leather Key Charm yet again, we’ve deep dived into slightly more affordable options such as the Annika Inez Sterling Silver cord pendant which is available at Selfridges for £124 or a Leather Key holder we found on Etsy for £50. Pendants are coming in all forms this season and gone are the choker days, which frankly thank god for a minute. They especially look great styled against white tees and shirts, but wear them cross body or hanging to the front and they still look cool as hell. As soon we saw the image of Julie Pelipas wearing a cord leather card holder round her neck at PFW this week, we knew we needed to include this styling nuance into this round up, holding her coffee and notebook because her essentials are around her neck are just *gah* genius.

POV: We’ll be wearing ours in the evening with a black dress to add a spin on en evening look and if we’re holding coffee, it’s fine to swap out for a champagne flute right?
